Boudoir Photography Trends I LOVE (And Hate) - Episode 90 of the Sustainable Freedom with Boudoir Photography Podcast with Tracy Lynn! When you think of boudoir photography trends, what comes to mind? In the late 90s/early 2000s, it was all the rage to have black and white or extra vignette-style photos. Then, in the 2010s, super-matte photos were the big thing. And then, it went to orange skin tones with mint green hues. And at the time, we all thought they were super cute. But now, we look back at old photos and probably cringe a little, right? What I’m trying to say is that trends will come and go. 3 Ways to Build a Portfolio that ARE NOT a Model Call - Episode 87 of the Sustainable Freedom with Boudoir Photography Podcast with Tracy Lynn! Photography model calls…yay or nay? After talking to some of you over on my Instagram Live recently, the general consensus is that it’s a nay. And it’s not hard to see why. Model calls are a tactic used to get clients in front of your camera, disguised as a modeling opportunity (not just using models themselves…that’s a totally separate thing!). People will often use this as a way to create a photography portfolio, especially if they’re just starting out. And it’s very attractive to many models (experienced or not) because they think they get free sessions and photos — all they need to do is show up and sign a release form. But more often than not, what ends up happening is they have to PAY for their photos. Not cool, right? Not only that, but model calls tend to make photographers look a little too green. You want to establish yourself as an authority in your niche/local area. But it’s hard to do that with model calls. The good news? There are plenty of other ways to build your portfolio. In 2013, I picked up a camera for the first time ever. I was living in Oklahoma, in a very unhealthy relationship, stuck in survival mode for years. And although I had a good job, I was just trying to make ends meet. Photography quickly became my creative outlet during that time of my life. It gave me the chance to meet new people, go to workshops, travel alone a lot, and, to be honest, learn who I was as a person instead of just being miserable all the time. Fast forward to 2016, and I moved to St. Louis. Right then and there, I decided it was time to make photography my full-time job so I could have freedom in my life and get to do more of what I wanted. For the next year, I worked really hard to hit a number that would allow me to do that. And in December 2017, I was FINALLY able to turn this into my full-time job. But what happened in the in-between? How exactly did I get there? Literally not a single soul. So to book out my photography schedule, I had to get really creative. I had to put myself out there, figure out who I wanted to photograph, and yes...being bold!
